Discover art and get to know Frankfurt on your own

This Website contains suggested tours that go through or around the city, that pass works of art and monuments – be it on foot, by bike or on public transport.

What you will be seeing is art in public spaces. Its trademark is diversity: Historical monuments and contemporary sculptures alike celebrate Frankfurt’s writers and philosophers, strong women, pioneers and oddballs. Memorials remind us of crimes committed during the Third Reich. Unique characteristics of the city are also reflected in artworks – “Green Sauce”, the local specialty, a necktie from the typical outfit of a banker, and cartoon characters from the Neue Frankfurter Schule (New Frankfurt School). Prominent pieces of international contemporary art function as status symbols for companies or as municipal landmarks, while at the same time encouraging any number of different interpretations. Moreover, new pieces of street art are constantly joining them, some secretly and overnight.
Art in public spaces is simply part of urban life in Frankfurt. It provides a topic of conversation, challenges us, prompts contemplation, offers us new insights, is delightful, is provocative, is humorous – all of it available round the clock and free of charge!

Tour 1 takes you to Comical Artworks. In the forest, in the meadows, along the riverbanks, in the GrünGürtel greenbelt that runs right round Frankfurt there are 15 humorous and whimsical sculptures to be found, sculptures that are the work of members and followers of the Neue Frankfurter Schule.

Going by the name of Short and sweet (Kurz und gut) Tour 2 presents important works of art and monuments. Only three hours in length, it is suitable for a short visit to the city.

Tour 3 takes in the works of art and memorial sites to be found along the semi-circle formed by the old city walls – the ramparts. These works pay homage to some of Frankfurt’s leading minds, the “Frankfurter Prominenz”, as well as reminding us of events from history. The tour holds the promise of a prolonged stroll through the circular strip of park that follows the inner ring road.

Tour 4 – Strictly Art is exclusively concerned with the art of the 20th and 21st centuries! Proceeding right through central downtown, the tour also has one or two detours into different districts and presents highlights from the world of art, covering a distance of eight kilometers in total.

Tour 5 – Grand Tour offers a large meandering excursion. Covering eight kilometers, it combines experiencing art with stories and anecdotes, providing in-depth insights into Frankfurt’s history.
